The European Parliament (EP), in a motion for a resolution adopted on 18 June 2025, emphasised the need for independent and effective judicial systems with highly qualified personnel, condemning interference in corruption investigations and the misuse of judicial systems for political ends in the Member States.
The resolution, which was adopted by 405 votes in favour, 210 against, and 36 abstentions in the EP Plenary, was based on a report prepared by Member of the European Parliament Ana Catarina Mendes (S&D, Portugal). The resolution called for the stronger implementation of EU values and the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union and warns that the legitimacy of the EU legal order is at stake.
The resolution highlighted the deterioration of protection for minorities and vulnerable groups and called for hate crimes and hate speech to be criminalised at EU level.
Moreover, the resolution condemned the attacks on press freedom, the use of spyware against journalists and civil society, and the spread of disinformation undermining democratic processes, and called for the full implementation of recent EU legislation such as the Media Freedom Act.
The resolution further called for EU funds to be more closely linked to Member States’ compliance with the rule of law.
The Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) contributed to the report prepared by MEP Ana Catarina Mendes (S&D, Portugal) through MEP and FUEN President Loránt Vincze (EPP, Romania) in February 2025. ABTTF called on all Member States to ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities of the Council of Europe, as well as to coordinate with the Council of Europe, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations (UN).
