Greece ranks first in cost of living and last in the protection of human rights!

10.01.2025

ABTTF President: “One of the most obvious examples of our country’s systematic violation of freedom of association, one of the most fundamental human rights, and its disregard for international law is undoubtedly the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights regarding three associations of our community, which it has not executed for almost 17 years. Therefore, we once again call on the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which oversees the execution of the final judgments of the ECtHR, to immediately initiate an infringement procedure against our country, which insists on not fulfilling its obligations before the European Convention on Human Rights’’.

In an article published on the agonaskritis.gr news website, which compares Greece and Portugal, both members of the European Union (EU) and of similar size, it is pointed out that, in contrast to the progress in Portugal, Greece ranks first in terms of cost of living and last in terms of the protection of human rights.

In the news article, it is indicated that every issue that the current government in Greece has handled has resulted in disaster, citizens have been killed for no reason, the country has been discredited and condemned for violating international law, and citizens and businesses have to pay more expensive electricity bills by shifting the cost to consumers.

“Greece has recently come under serious criticism from the international community for systematic violations of human rights and the rule of law. In a resolution of the European Parliament in February 2024 and in the 2024 Rule of Law Report of the European Commission, it was explained that the rule of law is under serious threat in our country. After the recent legal scandals in our country, the vast majority of citizens believe that their fundamental rights and freedoms are under threat and do not trust the government in any way. One of the most obvious examples of our country’s systematic violation of freedom of association, one of the most fundamental human rights, and its disregard for international law is undoubtedly the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights concerning three associations of our community, which it has not executed for almost 17 years. Therefore, we once again call on the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which oversees the execution of the final judgments of the ECtHR, to immediately initiate an infringement procedure against our country, which insists on not fulfilling its obligations before the European Convention on Human Rights’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
