24.01.2022

ABTTF President: ‘This attack, which targeted the Muslim community of about 500,000 people in Athens, poses a clear threat to social peace and tranquillity. The authorities of our country should conduct the investigation with great care, identify the perpetrators and punish them before the judiciary as they deserve. This is our clear demand from our country!’

An explosion took place outside a masjid in the capital Athens. At around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday 23 January, an improvised explosive device containing screws and nails was thrown at a building used as a masjid in the Patisia neighbourhood of central Athens.

While there were no casualties in the explosion in front of the building, there was damage of the property of the building where the explosion occurred and the surrounding vehicles. Police have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators in what has been described as a terrorist attack, as the target is directly in the masjid, according to the Muslim Association of Greece.

‘As ABTTF, we strongly condemn the terrorist attack on the masjid in Athens. This attack, which targeted the Muslim community of about 500,000 people in Athens, poses a clear threat to social peace and tranquillity. Trust in law enforcement and the judiciary is essential for social solidarity and co-existence. The authorities of our country should conduct the investigation with great care, identify the perpetrators and punish them before the judiciary as they deserve. This is our clear demand from our country!’ said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
