The foundation estate belonging to the Turkish community in Kos has been put up for sale by the appointed Charitable Foundation Administration!

ABTTF President: ‘We request this sale which is in violation of the legislation on the foundation adminstration to be stopped and demand that the administration of the foundations in Rhodes and Kos take office through elections and not by appointment’. 

In the Dodecanese region of our country Greece and on the island of Kos, the charitable foundation i.e. vakf estate belonging to the Turkish community was auctioned by the appointed Kos Foundation Administration.

According to the sales statement issued on 29 July 2021 by Foundation President Elvan Kocaoğlu, the foundation’s 38,240 square meter foundation estate in the Platitsi region will be auctioned on Friday, 20 August 2021 at an auction price of €700,000.

Kos was governed by a system in which the trilateral Italian system consisting of the Community, Foundations and Mufti continued to be implemented following the transfer of the Dodecanese from Italy to Greece in 1947. Accordingly, the rights and powers of the community and administration of the charitable foundations on the islands were determined, and this system, which was implemented until 1965, was later not implemented anymore with the 1967 Colonels’ Junta regime and then names that were appointed by the government began to took office within the administration of the foundations. According to the Evkaf Regulation, although the foundation’s assets cannot be bought, sold or acquired, the property belonging to the foundations has been put up for sale.

Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) made the following statement: “According to the Evkaf Regulation, while the foundation’s assets cannot be bought or sold, valuable estates belonging to the Turkish community in Kos is disposed of through sales by the government-appointed Foundation Administration. In the past, the Culture and Solidarity Association of the Rhodes, Kos and Dodecanese Turks and we have raised this issue several times. We request this sale which is in violation of the legislation on the foundation adminstration to be stopped and demand that the administration of the foundations in Rhodes and Kos take office through elections and not by appointment”.
