ABTTF: Hate-based attacks carried out by racist and fanatical groups targeting the Turkish community in Western Thrace and its representatives threaten the peace and tranquillity environment in our region.
A verbal attack has been perpetrated on Xanthi Mufti Ahmet Mete. On the evening of Friday, 27 November 2020, an unidentified person or persons wrote ‘The Good Turk is a Dead Turk’ and threats in the mirror of the elevator in the apartment where Mufti Mete lives in Xanthi.
Mufti Ahmet Mete indicated the attack from his social media account as follows: ‘Unfortunately, while the world is dealing with pandemics and deaths, ‘Kalos Turkos mono nekros’. ‘Skata sta mutra hoca’ ‘The Good Turk is a Dead Turk’ signed by X.A. was written to the mirror of the lift of the apartment where we are staying. First of all, it is good that they have recognised our Turkishness. However, those who say that 'Minority is comfortable, there is equality' should see such attacks. Politicians and the press attacking the minority will still play ostrich in these situations. The apartment dwellers called security and the police took care of it. We hope the authorities will take this into consideration’.
On behalf of Western Thrace Turks living in Europe and as the Presidium of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF), we condemn the attack targeting our Mufti Ahmet Mete and convey our best wishes to him. Hate and threats-based attacks carried out by racist and fanatical groups targeting the Turkish community in Western Thrace and its representatives threaten the peace and tranquillity environment in our region. In the face of this abominable attack, we demand that the relevant authorities immediately carry out the necessary prosecution and investigation, finding their perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
