ABTTF President: “The systematic violation of the rule of law in our country is also explicitly criticised in reports by the European Commission, the European Parliament and independent international organisations. However, rather than taking these constructive criticisms and citizens’ concerns into account, the government prefers to cover up these legal scandals for political reasons, acting as it sees fit.”.
According to a new public opinion poll conducted by Athens-based ALCO, founded in 1989, between 5 and 9 May 2026, the vast majority of citizens in Greece believe that the rule of law does not exist in the country.
72 per cent of those surveyed – that is, seven out of every ten people – stated that “there is no rule of law in Greece”, whilst only 24 per cent noted that institutions operate within the framework of the rule of law.
In the same survey, the ruling New Democracy (ND) saw its support drop to 22.8 per cent, marking the lowest level recorded in ALCO polls since before 2019. PASOK-KINAL came second with 12.2%, whilst Greek Solution received 8%, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) 7%, Course of Freedom 5.7%, SYRIZA 3.4%, Voice of Reason 2.6%, MeRA25 2.5%, NIKI 2.0%, New Left at 1.0 per cent and the Democrats at 0.9 per cent.
“The results of ALCO’s latest public opinion survey have once again confirmed the steady deterioration of the rule of law in our country, Greece, in recent years, as well as the serious problems in the functioning of democracy. Following a series of legal scandals in our country, the overwhelming majority of citizens no longer trust the government or the judiciary. The systematic violation of the rule of law in our country is also explicitly criticised in reports by the European Commission, the European Parliament and independent international organisations. However, rather than taking these constructive criticisms and citizens’ concerns into account, the government prefers to cover up these legal scandals for political reasons, acting as it sees fit. The government must take the necessary steps without delay to restore citizens’ trust in our country’s democratic institutions, and above all, must show full respect for the rule of law, one of the most fundamental principles of democracy’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
