The vast majority of the Greek population does not trust democratic institutions

26.02.2026

ABTTF President: “As this latest public opinion poll clearly demonstrates, while representative democracy in our country, Greece, is facing a major crisis of legitimacy, our leaders are still trying to lecture the world on democracy and the rule of law”.

A public opinion survey conducted between 25 November and 16 December 2025 with 5,043 voters on behalf of the think tank ‘‘Progressive Lab’’ reveals a lack of trust in democratic institutions and a crisis of representation in Greece.

According to the survey, 60.5 per cent of the Greek public does not trust the government, 64.5 per cent does not trust the national parliament, 69 per cent does not trust the judiciary, 80 per cent does not trust political parties and 90.3 per cent does not trust the media, while 76 per cent is dissatisfied with the functioning of democracy in the country. Compared to France, Romania, Sweden and the United Kingdom, Greece presents the most pessimistic picture, particularly in terms of institutional trust, future expectations and the living conditions of younger generations.

Meanwhile, in Geneva, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the 61st session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and emphasised the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms and respect for international law around the world.

“As this latest public opinion poll clearly demonstrates, while representative democracy in our country, Greece, is facing a major crisis of legitimacy, our leaders are still trying to lecture the world on democracy and the rule of law. Minister of Foreign Affairs Gerapetritis speaks of the importance of fundamental rights and freedoms and respect for international law, yet our country, one of the oldest members of the European Union and constantly boasting of being the cradle of democracy, does not recognise the existence of our community and denies its ethnic Turkish identity. Our country, which has failed to execute the European Court of Human Rights judgments concerning our community’s associations for 18 years and has tried every means to avoid doing so, disregards international law and the rule of law’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
