ABTTF President: “The fact that four-fifths of the public do not trust the legislature and the executive branch is a very serious warning to the political establishment in our country, particularly the government. The successive legal and corruption scandals have naturally led to this outcome. The government must take the public’s concerns about the state of democracy seriously and take immediate steps to restore confidence in the political system”.
According to a Eurobarometer public opinion survey conducted by the European Commission in October-November 2025 across the 27 EU Member States, the vast majority of the Greek public does not trust the national parliament or the government.
According to the survey results, 78% of the Greek public does not trust the national parliament, while 79% does not trust the government. Across the EU as a whole, these figures stand at 61% and 63% respectively.
58% of the Greek public does not trust the EU, 54% are pessimistic about the EU’s future, and 61% do not feel they belong to the EU.
On the other hand, 90% of the Greek public believes that fake news and misinformation are a major problem for democracy.
“The results of the Eurobarometer public opinion survey have once again confirmed, leaving no room for doubt, the serious problems faced in our country, Greece, in recent years regarding democracy and the rule of law. The fact that four-fifths of the population do not trust the legislature and the executive branch is a very serious warning to the political establishment in our country, particularly the government. The successive legal and corruption scandals have naturally led to this outcome. The government, which is primarily responsible for this situation, is not only failing to shed light on these scandals but is also systematically violating the rule of law by using the judiciary, which it has completely politicised over the years, as a tool for intimidation in strategic cases for political motives. The European Commission and the European Parliament also criticise the government in their reports, drawing attention to the decline in democracy and the rule of law in our country. The government must take the public’s concerns about the state of democracy seriously and take immediate steps to restore confidence in the political system’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
