The trial of the claim for damages filed by the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) against the news site newsbreak.gr, which published defamatory and false news about ABTTF, was held on Thursday, 8 May 2025, in Athens.
The hearing took place at the Court of First Instance with several judges in Athens, with ABTTF President Halit Habip Oğlu, ABTTF’s lawyer and ABTTF’s legal advisor in attendance.
On 27 October 2021, the news website newsbreak.gr, based in Athens, published a news article titled ‘‘Provocation by ABTTF with the flag of Western Thrace in Germany’’, which contained false allegations against ABTTF regarding its 21st General Assembly. Regarding the aforementioned news article, ABTTF filed a claim for damages against the news website newsbreak.gr and the company owning the website at the Court of First Instance with a Single Judge in Athens.
“We are in Athens for the hearing of the claim for damages we filed against the newsbreak.gr news site for publishing false news about our Federation. Our legal proceedings continue against those who are trying to discredit us and our work. We will not remain silent in face of the lies and slander of those who seek to discredit us by defaming our efforts to raise awareness of the issues facing the Turkish community in Western Thrace; we will pursue legal action, as we have done in the newsbreak.gr case!”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
