17.09.2024

ABTTF President: “Recognising that every individual has the right to an adequate standard of living for the health and well-being of himself and his family, the government should use all economic means at its disposal effectively and efficiently in the fight against poverty in our country and urgently implement development policies that will end poverty’’.

According to the latest data published by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), Greece has the third worst rate of material and social deprivation in the EU.

In 2023, 6.8 per cent of the EU population, or 29.2 million people, faced severe material and social deprivation. Romania with 19.8 per cent and Bulgaria with 18 per cent had the highest rate, followed by Greece with 13.5 per cent. The country with the lowest rate was Slovenia with 2 per cent.

In 2023, women in the EU were more likely to experience severe material and social deprivation than men. This rate was 7.2 per cent for women and 6.5 per cent for men.

“As shown by the latest data released by Eurostat, approximately 14 out of every 100 people in our country Greece live in severe poverty and are deprived of an adequate quality of life. In Western Thrace, where our community lives, young people have been increasingly migrating to Western European countries in recent years, where job opportunities are more plentiful, in order to build a better future for themselves and their families. The government, recognising that every individual has the right to an adequate standard of living for the health and well-being of himself and his family, should effectively and efficiently use all economic means at its disposal in the fight against poverty in our country and should urgently implement development policies that will end poverty’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
