23.09.2019

ABTTF President: We fully support the Parents’ Council, the School Council and the parents who are demonstrating their reactions by using their democratic rights. If rights are not granted, they are conquered, there is no other way!”

Xanthi Minority Secondary School - High School, has organized a march on 23 September 2019. The parents, who are against the dual shift system in education due to the lack of enough classrooms for students who have reached to 740 this year, demanded for a solution for the school building.

At the meeting organized on Friday, September 20 by the Board of the Xanthi Minority Secondary School High School Council and the Parents’ Council and attended by many parents it was decided that the boycott started at the school shall be continued and that they shall march on 23 September, Monday at 11.30 from the school to the downtown and from there to the Governor’s Office.

In February and June 2019, the Parents’ Council and the School Council forwarded their requests to the authorities to resolve the building problem at the school but did not receive a positive response. With the start of the new school year, a boycott was held on 12 September 2019 at the school due to the shift-system in education after two years break.

Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF), said: “We support the protest march of the Xanthi Minority Secondary School-High School with the decision taken at the General Assembly of the Parents’ Council. The fact that no steps have been taken to solve the school building problem despite the demands of the Parents’ Council and the School Council means that the state does not fulfill its responsibility. We fully support the parents’ council, the school council, the parents and students who are demonstrating their reactions by using their democratic rights. If rights are not granted, they are conquered, there is no other way!”
