The rulers and politicians of our country are uncomfortable with the protection of the Turkish community in Western Thrace by our motherland

05.02.2025

ABTTF President: “Our expectation and request from the leading politicians of our country, including Mantzos, is that they act responsibly, leaving aside cheap political interests, and support, not obstruct, the efforts and steps to develop the recent positive agenda between our country and our motherland”.

PASOK-KINAL MP and also the party’s Chief for Foreign Policy Dimitrios Mantzos made a written statement on the messages issued by the Ministries of Affairs and National Defence of Türkiye on the occasion of the 37th anniversary of the 29th January Social Solidarity and National Resistance Day of the Turkish community in Western Thrace.

Mantzos claimed that these provocative posts are part of the Turkish government’s recent aggressive statements against Greece and reflect Türkiye’s growing interest in the Muslim minority in (Western) Thrace, even within the context of the ongoing Greek-Turkish political dialogue process.

‘I read with astonishment the baseless allegations of PASOK-KINAL Chief for Foreign Policy Dimitrios Mantzos, one of the largest political parties of our country, which are also detrimental to the ongoing positive dialogue process between our country and our motherland. Just as our country protects the Greek minority in neighbouring Albania and negotiates with Albania for the protection and development of their rights, our motherland does the same for our community, protects us by doing what should be done, and naturally raises our issues in the bilateral relations. Our expectation and request from the leading politicians of our country, including Mantzos, is that they act with a sense of responsibility, leaving aside cheap political interests, and support, not hinder, the efforts and steps towards the development of the recent positive agenda between our country and our motherland’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
