ABTTF President: “What is at stake is the education of our children in an appropriate building and in a healthy environment and the observance of their right to education. Unfortunately, the rulers of our country continue to ignore the educational issues of our community’’.
Deputy Minister Zeta Makri responded to a question posed to the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports by Xanthi New Left MP Hüseyin Zeybek on 16 December 2024 in the plenary session of the Greek Parliament regarding the building issue of the Xanthi Turkish Minority Secondary and High School and the demand for a new building.
Makri claimed that the existing building of Xanthi Turkish Minority Secondary and High School is sufficient and safe and there is no need for a new school building.
Noting that the school building issue is not under the authority of her ministry, Makri further alleged that the state has been supporting the Xanthi Turkish Minority Secondary and High School for the past 50 years.
In the plenary session of the Parliament which was held on 16 December, Zeybek pointed out that the Xanthi Turkish Minority Secondary and High School had to carry out double-shift schooling for many years due to the lack of a building and that the applications made for the resolution of the building issue remained unanswered, and asked what kind of planning the Ministry of Education had made to solve this issue.
“The words of Deputy Minister of Education Makri denying the facts and her callous attitude of evading responsibility regarding the building issue of the Xanthi Turkish Minority Secondary and High School are absolutely unacceptable. The board of councillors, the parents’ association, the students and the parents of the students organised a protest action in September last year demanding a solution to the building issue, our Xanthi MPs submitted parliamentary questions on the issue, but Makri still claims that there is no need for the construction of a new school building. Enough is enough! What is at stake is the education of our children in a suitable building and in a healthy environment and the observance of their right to education. Unfortunately, the rulers of our country continue to ignore the educational issues of our community. We invite the authorities to take the necessary steps for the urgent solution of the building issue of our school and to respond to the just demands of our community”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
