Our region had a very difficult night as the fire in Mishos (Çepelli) lasted as far as Iasmos (Yassıköy).

In our country Greece, which struggled with the fire that broke out in Alexandroupoli on Saturday, 19 August, the fire that started in Mishos (Çepelli) in the prefecture of Rodopi on Monday, 21 August, spread to Polianthos (Narlıköy).

A joint crisis management centre was established at the local and state level in our country, which was fighting the fire all night long. Due to the roaring fire in Mishos (Çepelli), first the villages of Mishos (Çepelli) and Mega Pisto (Büyük Müsellim), and later the villages of Sostis (Susurköy), Polianthos (Narlıköy) and Linos (Kozlardere) were evacuated.

The firefighting continued throughout the Monday night in our region, it was a difficult night in our region.

For those who were damaged by the fire and did not have a place to stay, the Office of the Elected Mufti of Komotini opened the Şehreküstü, Kırmahalle, Yüksek Mescit and Bağlar Mahallesi mosques to the service of the victims.

In Xanthi, a campaign was launched to deliver the aid materials to be collected at the Kimméria (Koyunköy) Mosque to the teams working in the fire zones and to the victims.

A state of emergency was declared in the area of the Municipality of Sostis (Susurköy) by the decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection in order to meet the urgent needs and manage the consequences arising from the fire.

At the government level, according to the statement realised by the officials, the period until Wednesday will be of critical importance due to the strong winds prevailing across the country.

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias announced that within the measures taken until the morning of Wednesday, 23 August, it will not be possible to enter mountainous areas in Attiki, Viotia, Euboea, Kavala and Thessaloniki, and evacuations will take place without exception in settlements where evacuation decision has been made.

ABTTF President Halit Habip Oğlu made the following statement: “The fire, which started in Mishos (Çepelli) yesterday afternoon, spread to other villages and reached Iasmos (Yassıköy). We followed the situation in our region throughout the night, we experienced great fear. Our region and our country are going through very difficult days, the danger still continues due to the winds. Get well soon to our people in our region, we hope that the fires will be brought under control before they further spread’’.
