Due to the fire that broke out in Alexandroupoli on Saturday, 19 August 2023, the forest in the south of Evros was destroyed and many buildings were damaged.
A state of emergency was declared in the region due to the fire, and villages were evacuated for security reasons. The smoke also reached Komotini and Xanthi. The fire damaged agricultural fields, beehives, and livestock in the area.
According to the statement made by the police, the traffic continues on the Kipi-Feres-Alexandroupoli highway, the section of the Egnatia highway between the Ardani junction and the Alexandroupoli Amfitritis junction is temporarily closed to traffic in both directions.
