Greece is continuing its measures which deny the “Turkish” identity of the Turkish community in Western Thrace

07.02.2022

ABTTF President: “The Greek state and its representative government thus revealed its main purpose by adding the option ‘Pomak’ which is not a religious belief into the registration form. The purpose is clear: To divide our community by imposing different identities on us. However, as Western Thrace Turks, we will not be duped, and we will never allow those who wish to divide our community to divide us today and in the future. We would like our country to know this as it is.”

The Ministry of National Defense of Greece included the option “Pomakos (Pomak)” in the “religion” section of the registration form filled out electronically by military candidates.

According to the news report by Gündem newspaper, it has been indicated that in the form that is to be filled by the military candidates, in the “religious belief” section, although there is the “Muslim (Musulmanos)” option, there is also the “Pomak (Pomakos)” option which does not equate to a religious belief.

“The addition of the ‘Pomak’ option in the ‘religion’ section of the registration form prepared by the Ministry of National Defence to be filled out by the military candidates is a new example of the insidious practices of our country that deny the ‘Turkish’ identity of the Turkish community in Western Thrace. On the other hand, while religious beliefs are not specified in the identities of citizens in our country, the fact that military candidates are obliged to declare their religious beliefs raises a separate question mark. The Greek state and its representative government thus revealed its main purpose by adding the option ‘Pomak’ which is not a religious belief into the registration form. The purpose is clear: To divide our community by imposing different identities on us. However, as Western Thrace Turks, we will not be duped, and we will never allow those who wish to divide our community to divide us today and in the future. We would like our country to know this as it is”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
