Official visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey to Athens

01.06.2021

ABTTF President: “We hope that the positive mood following the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of our motherland and our country in Athens will lead to the establishment of a dialogue mechanism between the official authorities of our country and the Turkish community in Western Thrace.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met with Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Nikos Dendias in Athens on 31 May 2021.

Çavuşoğlu met with Prime Minister Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion and then met with Dendias at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dendias and Çavuşoğlu held a joint press conference after the meeting, which focused on bilateral relations and regional issues.

Dendias said they are aware of the serious problems between Turkey and Greece, adding that the purpose of today’s meeting is to take a preliminary step in negotiations between the two countries.

Çavuşoğlu noted that the dialogue must continue uninterruptedly to resolve the issues between the two countries, adding that there is will on both sides and that Turkey is ready to negotiate with Greece unconditionally and to improve relations in all areas.

It was also decided at the meeting that Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will met during the NATO summit on 14 June 2021, as Greece and Turkey agreed to mutually recognize the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines.

Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF) made the following statement: “We are very happy that the Foreign Ministers of our motherland and our country have sent messages of dialogue and cooperation in their statements after their meeting in Athens. As the Minister of Foreign Affairs of our motherland Çavuşoğlu emphasized, only two countries themselves can solve the outstanding problems. We hope that the positive mood after this meeting will lead to the establishment of a dialogue mechanism between the official authorities of our country and the Turkish community in Western Thrace.”
