Condemnation by Medrese-i Hayriye Councillors’ Delegation addressed to the appointed Komotini Foundations’ Administration

29.05.2020

Halit Habip Oğlu: “The appointed Foundations’ Administration must immediately cease to perceive Medrese-i-Hayriye as its backyard.’’

In its statement to the public, the Medrese-i-Hayriye Foundation Minority High School which belongs to the Turkish community in Western Thrace and is located in the city of Komotini, condemned the Komotini Foundations’ Administration which has been appointed by the Greek state for its cover-up of the illegitimate spending of foundation revenues under the pretext of granting disinfectants and masks to the school and using the school as a tool for its political goals.

In its statement, it was noted that is not acceptable that although the madrasah is known to be a foundation minority school under autonomous status and that the director had consulted with the Councillors’ Delegation and indicated there was no need in that respect, the appointed Komotini Foundations’ Administration President who co-operated with the deputy director who is of Greek origin was at the initiative of donations of disinfectants and masks to the madrasah on behalf of the foundations.

As part of the government measures aimed at preventing the further spread of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) in Greece which has affected the world and, in the statement, where it is underlined that disinfectants are provided by the municipality and the ministry like in every school and that masks and other protective materials are provided adequately by the Councillors’ Delegation and the School Family Association, it was requested that the foundation’s income for the years 2019 and 2020 which were supposed to pay for the needs of the madrasah but were usurped by the Foundations’ Administration should be paid urgently.

“Hayriye Madrasah is a Turkish school that provides religious education in autonomous status equally to the Turkish schools belonging to the Turkish community in Western Thrace within the framework of its educational autonomy. Despite the lack of demands and needs from the councillors’ delegation and the school family association with an arbitrary and imperative understanding of the appointed foundations’ administration, we see the donation of health supplies to the school as an attempt by the foundation’ administration to rule the school administration. It is impossible for us to accept this initiative which is an intervention in the autonomous status of the school. Arbitrary interventions against organisations that are autonomous should cease whether directly stemming from the government or by government appointed organs under the political opportunity of the pandemic. We would like all to know that as the Turkish community in Western Thrace, we will defend our rights with our eyes open”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
