Minister for Health Georgiadis: “The EP’s resolution on the rule of law is full of lies”

10.04.2024

ABTTF President: “The most striking example of the systematic violation of the rule of law and the politicisation of the higher judiciary in our country is that our country has ignored the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the associations of our community and has not executed them for the past 16 years. ‘The government should immediately abandon the poor mouth and populist discourse, and take the necessary steps without further delay, taking into account the warnings and criticisms regarding this negative situation regarding the rule of law in our country.’’

In his speech at the 15th Congress of New Democracy, Greek Minister for Health Adonis Georgiadis claimed that those who criticised the government did not want stability in the country.

Furthermore, Georgiadis claimed in his speech that the resolution of the European Parliament (EP) on the state of the rule of law in Greece was full of lies, and said that the resolution in question was an unfortunate moment for Europe.

“Are we surprised by the words of Minister for Health Georgiadis targeting the European Parliament? No... Georgiadis, just like the other members of the government, prefers to use a populist and aggressive tone instead of giving objective answers to warnings and constructive criticisms coming from Europe about serious developments that threaten the rule of law in our country. Even though the rulers of our country continue to deny the necessity and try to hide the truth, the state of the rule of law in our country is obvious today and there are serious issues in the functioning of the legal system due to the political pressure on the judiciary. According to a recent survey, only 3 out of 10 people in our country indicated that they trust the judiciary and judges. Leading non-governmental organisations in our country have submitted a report to the European Commission regarding the gradual deterioration of the rule of law. The most striking example of the systematic violation of the rule of law and the politicisation of the higher judiciary in our country is that our country has ignored the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the associations of our community and has not executed them for the past 16 years. ‘The government should immediately abandon the poor mouth and populist discourse, and take the necessary steps without further delay, taking into account the warnings and criticisms regarding this negative situation regarding the rule of law in our country’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
