The European Court of Justice rejects the appeal to cancel the registration of the “Minority SafePack” initiative by the European Commission

18.02.2022

ABTTF President: “With the latest judgment of the Court of Justice of the EU, it is once again underlined that the protection of the rights of minorities and the strengthening of cultural and linguistic diversity are values and objectives of the EU and should be taken into account in the works of the EU. The European Commission should review MSPI and take action on the legal proposals in MSPI to establish a minority protection mechanism at the EU level in light of the latest judgment of the Court of Justice of the EU.”

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has rejected Romania’s appeal against the judgment regarding the registration of the Federal Union of European Nationalities’ (FUEN) European Citizens’ Initiative titled “Minority SafePack (MSPI)” by the European Commission in 2017.

With its judgement, the Grand Chamber of CJEU has confirmed its first judgment of rejection as regards Romania’s appeal to cancel the registration of MSPI by the European Commission in 2017 and it has been noted that this is a final judgment in the case.

“The latest judgment of the Court of Justice of the EU is very gratifying for national and linguistic minorities in the EU and a positive sign for the future of MSPI. As it is known, the European Commission decided in January 2021 that it would not act on the nine legislative proposals in MSPI, which was supported by the European Parliament. However, with the latest judgment in this respect, it is once again underlined that the protection of the rights of minorities and the strengthening of cultural and linguistic diversity are values and objectives of the EU and should be considered in the works of the EU. The European Commission should review MSPI and take action on the legal proposals in MSPI to establish a minority protection mechanism at the EU level in light of the latest judgment of the Court of Justice of the EU”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
