Warning from The Council for Refugees in Greece

25.03.2020

In its application to the Council of State on Monday, the Greek Council for Refugees asked for the cancellation of the legal arrangement which had been published on 2 March 2020 in Greece and which temporarily suspended the right to apply for asylum and which organised the immediate deportation of all those who entered the country as asylum seekers in March 2020.

This government decision is seen by many institutions as a violation of international law, EU law and the principle of non-refoulement of asylum seekers.

The government's decision to suspend the previously unprecedented, asylum application application was condemned by several institutions, including the National Council for Human Rights, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights. The European Commission's special commission on Migration and Asylum Affairs recently said that the right to apply for asylum is a condition of international law and cannot be suspended.
