WESTERN THRACE

Stylianidis continues to target the Turkish community in Western Thrace

19.10.2021

ABTTF President: “MP Stylianidis continues his efforts to distort the facts in the eyes of the public, claiming that our motherland is using the Turkish community in Western Thrace as a tool at every opportunity just for the sakes of his own political career. Even Prime Minister Mitsotakis is now uncomfortable with Stylianidis’ remarks.”

Rodopi New Democracy Party (YDP) MP Evripidis Stylianidis continued to target the Turkish community in Western Thrace and its representatives in an interview published in the October 2021 issue of the magazine “Patrinorama”.

Stylianidis claimed that Turkey systematically pursues an underground plan to manipulate the Muslim minority in (Western) Thrace in all areas, focusing on directing the institutional and political representation of Muslim Greek citizens. Stylianidis further added that Turkey systematically aspires to transform the devout Muslim minority in (Western) Thrace into a “national Turkish minority”, thereby instrumentalising the minority and aiming for ‘joint management’ in the region.

“In an interview with ‘Patrinorama’ magazine, MP of our region Stylianidis reiterated the claims he has made many times in the past. In fact, this time he goes so far as to suggest that our motherland is aiming to establish a ‘joint administration’ in Western Thrace. Stylianidis continues his efforts to distort the facts in the eyes of the public, claiming that our motherland is using the Turkish community in western Thrace as a tool at every opportunity just for the sakes of his own political career. Even Prime Minister Mitsotakis is now uncomfortable with Stylianidis’ remarks. Such provocative statements by Stylianidis seriously damage the atmosphere of peace and tolerance in our region, where different cultures have lived together for centuries”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
