WESTERN THRACE

Uncertainty regarding the elections for the councillors’ delegations in the Western Thrace Turkish minority schools continues

16.03.2021

ABTTF President: “We request from the Greek authorities that the elections for the councillors’ delegations in the Western Thrace Turkish minority schools are held urgently within the framework of our educational autonomy.”

The elections for the councillors’ delegations in schools belonging to the Turkish community in Western Thrace which needs to be done have once again been postponed on grounds of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was stated that the elections, which had been postponed for the sixth time, would be held on 30 March 2021.

As it is known, it has been announced through a decision published by the Directorate for Primary and Secondary Education of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region that the elections for the councillors’ delegations in the Turkish minority schools in Western Thrace would be held on 22 December 2020.

In the statement issued by the Union of Western Thrace Minority Schools Councillors’ Delegations regarding the elections for the councillors’ delegations which were repeatedly postponed, it was stated that despite all the works, the problem has not been resolved and that the parents of the students were asked to share their opinions regarding the next steps.

“According to international and bilateral treaties, the councillors’ delegations in the Western Thrace Turkish minority schools must be elected. However, while the elections for the councillors’ delegations were postponed on the grounds of the Covid-19 pandemic, the fact that it was only the voting phase which was postponed but that the nomination period was not extended indicates that our country Greece does not have good intentions in this respect. Moreover, compared to other regions, Covid-19 cases in Komotini and Xanthi are almost non-existent, and schools are open. The postponement of the elections for the councillors’ delegations on grounds of the Covid-19 pandemic in our region which has a low number of cases raises suspicion within the Turkish community in Western Thrace. We request from the Greek authorities that the elections for the councillors’ delegations in the Western Thrace Turkish minority schools are held urgently”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
