Halit Habip Oğlu: “We call on our country Greece to immediately stop the practice of designating the appointments of the administration boards of the foundations belonging to the Turkish community in Western Thrace, and renew our request for the foundations’ administration boards to be elected.”
The mandate of the appointed administration board of the foundations (waqfs) in Komotini has been renewed. In accordance with the decision of 14.04.2020 signed by Macedonia and Thrace General Secretariat Coordinator Ioannis Savvas, the mandate of the chairman of the appointed Komotini Administration Board Selim İsa and board members has been renewed for one year. The administration board of foundations appointed by the Greek state is composed of 5 permanent and 2 substitute members.
“According to the practice which was launched in 1967, when the military junta had come to power in Greece, and still applies today, the administration boards of the foundations belonging to the Turkish community in Western Thrace are appointed by the state despite the fierce opposition of the Turkish community. However, the Turkish community in Western Thrace has the right to establish, manage and control at its own expense charitable foundations within the framework of 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. We call on our country Greece to immediately stop the practice designating the appointments of the administration boards of the foundations belonging to the Turkish community in Western Thrace, and renew our request for the foundations’ administration boards to be elected”, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
