WESTERN THRACE

MP Stylianidis accuses those who reacted to the provocation at Çınar Mosque of terrorising Turkish nationalism

23.10.2024

ABTTF President: “In what era are we living in, since when has it become a terrorist act to react in a democratic way and to express an opinion on the issue being reacted to? Stylianidis should know that what he is doing is above all a violation of freedom of thought and expression’’.

New Democracy MP for the Prefecture of Rodopi Evripidis Stylianidis wrote an article titled ‘‘Who will put an end to the terrorising Turkish nationalism in Thrace?’’ in the Foni Tis Rodopis newspaper about the provocation attempt by the appointed mufti regents of Komotini, Xanthi and Didymoteicho, who attended the opening ceremony of the Xanthi Madrasah on Friday, 11 October 2024, during the Friday prayers at the Aşağımahalle Çınar Mosque in Xanthi after the ceremony.

‘‘What exactly is the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs doing to stop the Turkish government’s interventionism in Thrace and to reverse Erdoğan’s policy of co-operation?’, Stylianidis asked in his article, accusing the politicians who opposed the provocation as fanatics and manipulated figures with extreme and fanatical behaviour.

‘‘It is incomprehensible that Stylianidis, MP of our region and member of the delegation of our country Greece to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), labelled the reaction of our community and the elders of our community to the provocation at Çınar Mosque as terrorising Turkish nationalism, this statement is indeed fanatic and extreme. Indeed, it is known to everyone that our community does not accept the names appointed by the state as religious leaders by taking away our religious autonomy in our region, so the incident at Çınar Mosque constitutes a provocation. Now, what is Stylianidis trying to do by calling on the government and the judiciary in the face of the justified reaction of our community? In what era are we living in, since when has it become a terrorist act to react in a democratic way and to express an opinion on the issue being reacted to? Stylianidis should know that what he is doing is above all a violation of freedom of thought and expression’’, said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
